Finding a Moment to Truly Unplug

The act of unplugging – from power and technology – is an action that can actually make the planet a better place and even make your moment more enjoyable. Now the irony of you reading a suggestion like this while on a website is not lost on us. Digital communication has revolutionized how we communicate and share stories, but we think taking a few steps to decreasing our reliance on being digitally connected will ultimately reap great rewards.

Here are few simple suggestions:

TRY AND ENJOY AN ANALOG EVENING EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE.

One of the six Solei moments that we offer is called Unplug; our favourite way to slow down after a long day at work. While you’re enjoying Solei Unplug, turn off your phone and laptop. Instead of streaming a movie, open a book and read a story. Instead of texting or DMing a friend, sit outside, and have a face to face conversation with them. Just imagine using your actual face to deliver an emoji instead of a key stroke. ;)

Go for a walk. Write in your journal. Watch a sunset. No power and no zeros & ones required.

BE AWARE OF DIGITAL WASTE.

While the act of sending an email has a lower carbon footprint than sending a letter via the post office, emails still require power1. So, we should be cognizant of unwanted digital correspondence. The simple act of unsubscribing to unwanted email lists can not only declutter your in-box, it can be sustainable in the long run.

UNPLUG POWER HOGS.

Unplug unused appliances. Even if a toaster or kettle is not in use, it is still pulling power. This is even greater when it’s a transformer – those little black boxes attached to power cord on electronics. They are constantly pulling power to keep devices charged.

HOLD OFF ON THE UPGRADE

While we all like a shiny new device, it often means you need to do something with your old one. The sheer amount of landfill space required for discarded devices (e-waste) and the accompanying damage caused by the harmful materials inside, is a global issue.2

Think about keeping your current device a bit longer. And when you absolutely can’t wait, give your old one to someone who’d love to have it. Holding off will also save you a lot of cash.

However you chose to unplug and enjoy a relaxing moment is up to you, everyone is different. But the fact remains, a few small actions by many will make our planet a better place today. And will leave it in better shape for tomorrow.
